Hi moms!
A lot of people ask me tips regarding how to celebrate their daughters’ first menstruation. And that is more than normal, knowing that most of us weren’t celebrated for this important passage, right?
So here are Some tips & tricks to create your personal unique ritual
1/ Cocreation. First of all every ritual is a cocreation with the person you are doing it for. There should be a touch of mystery of course, but no big surprises. So if for instance, your daughter wants to be just the two of you, you Will have to respect her wishes. Talk to her, give her time to think about what she wants, offering her Some options, Because this is new to her too.
2/ Inspire her. Give her Some examples of scenario’s and places where the ritual could be held. That Will inspire her and give her Some ideas of what a ritual could be. My daughter didn’t want a ritual in the first place… until I told her we could do it by the sea, Watch the sunrise etc. Than it was a YES! Find her door to inspiration.
3/ Give it time. Have these conversations when you have time ahead. You could invite her for dinner or for a brunch just the two of you. And brainstorm about it. Then leave it rest and talk about it a month later. Plant the seed and give it time to make roots and grow.
5/ Have an open attitude. Be open, without judgment and try not to impose your point of vue and wishes. This Will have the opposit effect and she might not want to consider it anymore. Talking about it and creating the ritual, is part of the ritual.
6/ Get inspired. Look for inspiration in nature, in Books or talk about it with other mothers. Watch the movie « Premières Lunes » by Mélanie Melot or read her book « Les premières lunes de ma fille ». I love it! Or read « red moon » by Miranda Gray. Or « reaching to the moon » (available in Dutch and French) by Lucy H.Pearce (for sale in my webshop). A beautiful book for young girls about to have their first moon.
Blandine Swyngedauw and I created a Menarche Ritual Box for mothers who want to create a ritual for their daughter’s first menstruation. It can be used as a step by step guidance or as a source of inspiration. There are two ritual scenarios in it, as well as gifts and information.
7/ Look for help. There are many ritual practitioners and menstrual coaches who would be happy to help you. I would be thrilled to help you out for sure! Let’s get in touch and talk about it! Contact me
